I am so disappoined to read this story about a school in Mississippi that canceled a prom rather than allowing a female student to attend with her girlfriend.  How does this happen still? What business is it of the schools?! Two girls should be allowed to go to a dance together. Unfortunately, the story makes it sound as if the student is now being criticized by her classmates because they believe it's her fault they won't have a prom. I'm disappointed there, too. It's a shame they didn't rally behind her and demand the students be allowed to attend.

WOW! That really is a shame. So if a group of girls who are single and want to go and enjoy prom with their friends rather than going with a guy who they'd have to entertain, what would the school have done? Society needs to realize they need to relax. JUST A LITTLE BIT.

Thats just silly. So , in order to attend prom, a girl MUST bring a boy as her escort? I did not go to prom myself so I really can not get behind the whole thing. But really, who cares who brings who and who hangs out with who?

When I was younger and went to dances, the girls would go with the girls and the boys with the boys. And then even at the dance itself...the girls would dance and the boys would fool around on the bleechers.

My guess is that there is way more to this story. Plus, it's Mississippi...not that theres anything wrong with that!

Reminds me of the civil rights struggles of the '50s and '60s

The thing is the kids already knew that this girl is a lesbian.  The kids know long before any officials do.  So its not like she was outed.  Let the kids have the prom and let the girls go.

I just saw that story as well and thought it was pretty ridiculous.  Just when you think we've come a long way in some areas, we're still living in the dark ages at times.

That is just bizarre, but then again, Mississippi isn't exactly known for being tolerant, intellectual, and mainstream. There should be a lawsuit following on the basis of denying the entire class their civil rights. Hopefully, no one will ostracize the gay student. I had lived in Mississippi years ago and they were still paddling students then for minor infractions, such as talking during class. It's an embarassment that our Male & Female Soldiers are fighting overseas to protect the rights and freedoms of others and our children don't have them here at home!

i think that it is blown way out of proportion.i do not care if you are gay straight lesbian black white purple.. but come on... to me it scream ATTENTION... give me a break, the girlfriend, needs to wear a tux. i mean come on. why bring all that attention to yourself.i feel the girld went about it all wrong. and the comment about if a group of single girls want to go, i mean come on. sure that is fine. i doubt any of them would be wearing a tux..
