seems like the textbooks, and the educational curriculum, are being revised and rewritten in texas.

apparently, texas is the largest buyer of textbooks in the USA.  so this is seen as momentous for that reason.

*i* see it as momentous for other reasons.

see article, here:

what do you think?

I don't know if we've ever learned the "true" history of our country and its relationships w/other nations. But judging by the article, it's soon to get worse.

i understand the text books are always slanted by the majority sentiment of powerful folks.

however, i don't find this, based on my reading of the article and what's going to be happening, to be the majority sentiment.

i mean....putting in that chinese weren't racially or ethnically targeted for determent camps?

some of the other claptrap that's going to happen?

erasing thomas jefferson and his enormous contributions to our nation?  (because he coined the phrase separation of church and state, of all things.)

i'm surprised this hasn't gotten more press, and that more people aren't expressing outrage.

too many people all over the country living in information bubbles.  sigh.

I am thrilled that we have only one more year of school left and that we don't live in Texas. Between what promises to be the decimation of public education due to budget cuts in practically every state, every district and loonies like those in Texas, I am grateful to be finally out of a system that I have always had such faith in.

Then again, this is Texas we are talking about. Texas is one of only 2 states to reject the implementation of nation-wide educational standards, claiming that Texans know how to best teach Texan children (this was in the NY Times just this week. The other state, which should shock no one is Alaska). And it is the same state whose governor thinks that his state has the right to leave the union - an issue which many of us thought was decided back in 1865. Things might be bigger in Texas, but I am convinced they are also stupider.

Textbooks, in my opinion need to be politics neutral. Both sides can be presented and then we must let something radical happen - let the students come to their own conclusions. As parents, my husband and I have always been open and honest with our children. We have discussed everything that they have questioned and presented both sides, even if we disagree with the opposite position. And then we let them decide. Sometimes the things they say surprise us but we know that we have done our job as parents>

If a parent is not happy with the cirriculum or the text books, there are other options. To force all schools to teach what is basically a form of political indoctrination is just plain wrong.

Wow that's not in no way monopolizing a political agenda there

Way to brain wash a new generation of conservative right wingest.

If you are going to change the text books you must teach all sides of our nations history.  Not just what suits the conservative majority.

I guess I'm just not that bright because I thought that textbook content came from historians and academicians, not politicians.
